Bri

The mesmerizing scent of coffee Bri couldn’t drink yet taunted her from its pot while she filled a water bottle from the kitchen sink. Her mother was at the table typing on her laptop, and since Bri knew it was her favorite time to write, she didn’t try to pull her mother away with conversation. But Bri wanted to talk to her mother, which was why she’d gotten up early, so she’d have a spare half hour before she had to leave to meet Eric for their run.

She’d gone to bed confused about her feelings for him. When they were talking by the water, she had been so infatuated that she’d almost convinced herself he’d wanted to kiss her. But he hadn’t kissed her, and she’d felt like a fool and ran. He chased her, though. She’d made sure of it by stealing his beer.

She sat at the table next to her mother, knowing the chair creaking would alert her to her presence.

Her mother’s fingers were still moving as she chuckled and looked at Bri. “Hold on. I’m almost done.” She typed for a few more seconds before ending with a dramatic keystroke. “There. Now, what’s on your mind, my dear?”

Bri sighed. “I have a crush on some guy and I’m afraid—no, I’m sure—I’m being a fool. But I can’t help myself.”

Her mother pushed her laptop away and leaned her chin on her hand. “Why do you need to?”

“Because it’s never going to turn into anything, and I’m wasting my time and emotions on an unattainable guy.” The concerned look on her mother’s face made Bri quickly add, “Not that he’s married.”

Ah.” Eileen sat up and took a sip of her coffee. She grimaced, making Bri think it had gone cold. “So, it’s a waste of your time. Tell me, does he make you happy when you’re around him?”

“Yes.” Bri stood and grabbed her mother’s coffee cup, walked to the sink, and dumped it out. “Why wouldn’t he?”

“And do you smile when you think about him?” Eileen asked as she turned in her chair toward Bri.

“Yes.” Bri frowned as coffee splashed into her mother’s cup. “That’s the problem.”

“Is it though?” Eileen took the cup of hot coffee Bri offered her. “There’s nothing wrong with the giddy happiness a crush brings. It’s fun.”

“It is fun, but it can be painful, too.” Bri recalled how she felt seeing Eric laughing with Lisa. “I don’t want to be thinking about a guy I can’t have, Mom. Dreams are only great if you think they can come true.”

“And fantasies are great because often you know they can’t come true but you like imagining it anyway. I think it’s harmless fun if you want it to be.”

“I suppose.” But Bri knew what her real trouble was. She knew that she wouldn’t be satisfied with merely fantasizing about Eric. She had never been one to hope and wish without action. She realized that was what scared her. She wanted to pursue Eric, and that was a whole lot like jumping out of a plane with a parachute that might not work.
